Hidden Negative Keywords To Increase Your AdWords Income

July 26, 2007

Here’s a very useful tip for everyone…

Of my many campaigns, a lot of times I promote new medical devices as those tend to have zero competition and a super profit margin.

Let’s take an example that one of the keywords is “[X] cure” for a product that I was promoting.

I did some tracking and saw that the search terms coming in was from English rock band “The Cure” and it just happened that [X] was a lyric in one of their songs – I totally was unaware!

Lesson learned…. before setting off a campaign, make sure the keyword volume is not coming from bands or movies or pop culture cliches.

Another way you can notice this is seeing how the keyword will have a very low CTR for some reason despite you using all the AdWords Killer ad copy techniques.

You can avoid this issue using a couple ways…..

1. Do a search on your keyword and see if the keyword tools say “band” “lyrics” “movies” etc…

2. As a universal rule, I always include the negative campaign keywords: lyrics, music, song, movie, download

The only exception is when you are promoting media related products.

Otherwise, our ad copy techniques like “super relevance” will be pulling in insane CTRs of horrible traffic!!!!

At the end of the day, by filtering out the crap and these extra visitors, your conversion rate in affiliate marketing will skyrocket.

This is just another step in the process towards creating a healthy income with Google’s pay-per-click system.

How AdWords Conversion tracking is crucial now….

July 12, 2007

Today, I just did paid private consultation with one member James (real name omitted) about his campaigns.

He could not figure out why he was having so much trouble.

After turning on some stats, it hit me SMACK MIDDLE.

He did not track at all.

$800, $900, $10,000 rolls down your affiliate costs like that….

This is why I tell so many entry level affiliates to use conversion tracking.

Here’s a quick time… and I don’t care if you use landing pages or not. This costs nothing but 30 seconds of your time.

Go into your ad groups, make sure you click on “Customize Columns” and then turn on Quality Score, Conversion Number, and any other stats you feel will illuminate for you.

It’s a wise thing to start early …. and will save you a ton of headaches down the line.

I know I know… Some of you are thinking…. “Geez, I don’t need that” … be prepared for a rude awakening when changes come.

I personally go even a step further to track sales per time interval and commissions earned ROI…..

I hope that makes a good tip for you to start thinking.

Google Hates These Niches

July 9, 2007

Maybe……

They seem to get into a ton of trouble with Google’s ad policy and I’ve verified this over and over as an affiliate marketer.

Niches to be careful with:

- Data entry

-  Mp3 Downloads

- Satellite TV downloads

These have the few popular ones that seem to get a lot of attention… and many AdWords accounts are being shut down because of this….. Not a good thing.

Even if you’re an SEO, make sure the merchant that you promote is not hustling a scam. Becuase he will bring your reputation down with him….

Display URL for Quality Score

July 3, 2007

I came across a discussion recently about PPC affiliate marketing with my friend Darrell Merrick known as the AdWords Mad Scientist…

I’ve learned something about Display URL tricks…..

Let’s say I wanted to improve this following ad for the keyword “matrix trilogy dvd”:

Matrix Trilogy DVD
The ultimate collection
10 DVDs in one set.
BoxedDVDs.com

I can easily improve this by a minor tweak to the URL:

Matrix Trilogy DVD
The ultimate collection
10 DVDs in one set.
BoxedDVDs.com/Matrix

Obviously it highlights the keyword for the human eye better, upping that CTR. The second, less-recognized benefit is that it ups Quality Score slightly.

This is particularly useful if you’re catering to Google’s ad-landing congruence policy. Basically, the more you contour an ad to match the landing (whether your own or the merchant’s, the higher your Quality Score) and remember, this all builds account history.
